Addressing Social Change
We have a long-held passion for working on projects that have the potential to have a profound lasting impact on society. It takes time but, with effort, cultural norms, attitudes, relationships and the way institutions work are changed by social movements — think of women’s rights, marriage equality, green energy and youth justice.
We’ve observed when the economy is in decline, the impacts of social dysfunction increase. Economic pressure significantly affects mental health, domestic violence, child protection, unemployment, incarceration, etc. This, in turn, increases the need for social and behaviour education and change programs.
A Diminishing Public Purse
We are living in an era of diminishing public monies. Organisations can no longer rely on government funding to further their causes and operations. They must seek innovative ways to extend their services, to build revenue, markets and public awareness.
We have consistently won government tenders and projects for social change initiatives, which is great, but we noticed as budgets became tighter many of the these initiatives failed. It was heartbreaking to be involved in good projects that were destined to fail because of a lack of resources. Equally, some don’t succeed because their organisations simply do not know how to or have the capacity to raise funds and develop good funding strategies.
Making it Happen
At Mars we realised that if we really wanted to address social change, it wasn’t enough to simply provide websites and designs as requested; we needed to help the organisations with their stakeholder engagement, strategy and fundraising too.
This ‘learning’ has set our development objectives, and enabled us to formulate our Make it Happen approach. We believe that planning for our clients’ success, will be our success.
